Oxford Library's Controversial Expansion Plan

"Next week the local authority will consider Oxford University's solution, a £29m new store to hold 7.8m books, which the Bodleian estimates would not only solve the current crisis but also give it shelving space for the next 20 years. However, many in Oxford regard it as the wrong building in the wrong place and claim it could pose a threat to cherished views. They also point out that it will be sited on a flood plain." College approved for online degree

NORTH PLATTE -- Mid-Plains Community College students are now able to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business completely online, thanks to recent approval by the Higher Learning Commission.

In a letter notifying the college of its approval, the HLC said the Institutional Actions Council had voted to extend the college's accreditation to include distance delivery of degree programs without prior Commission approval. This came as good news to college administrators and faculty, who have been working for several years to enhance and expand MPCC's distance learning and online offerings and develop degree-oriented online curriculum.

Detroit Museum Returns Venetian Gem To Its Ceiling

"Tintoretto's enormous 'The Dreams of Men,' one of the stars of the Detroit Institute of Art's permanent collection, was reinstalled last month in a specially designed octagonal ceiling perch 24 feet above the ground. The painting -- an oil on canvas measuring more than 12 feet long and 7 feet wide and depicting gods and mythological figures -- was painted for the bedroom ceiling of a well-to-do Venetian merchant around 1550. More than 450 years later, the DIA has returned the work to its original ceiling orientation, offering Detroiters an exhilarating perspective that no other museum in the United States can match." Master’s Degree Programs Expanding Nationwide

The number of students in the University of Chicago program that bestows a Master of Arts degree in social sciences has quadrupled since 1989, jumping to 160 from 40, and despite a tuition price tag of $37,000, every year more students clamor for admittance.

“It's an expensive degree, but students have calculated how fast they get their investment back," said John J. MacAloon, an associate dean at the University of Chicago and director of the program. “And it is beneficial for the university because there is a lot of tuition income to be had."

More students than ever have started master's programs this fall, and universities are seeing those programs as potentially lucrative sources of revenue. The number of students earning these degrees around the country has nearly doubled since 1980.
